Grotto Mountain

Being one of my first early morning hikes I wasn’t to sure what to show in the video because the trail up Grotto Mountain would be quite difficult in day light let alone with only a head lamp.

I can’t say I’m overly proud of the images from this trip but it was good practice for Mount Lady MacDonald…

I quickly realized during this hike that I wasn’t going to be getting a good sunrise, so instead I made use of some of the moody clouds and the near invisible three sisters to show just what I was dealing with.

This was the only light sign of sunrise I saw all morning so I figured it was worth a shot. I really like how even with the super thick clouds the sun was able to just break through.

Goat Creek

Due to a serve wind warning I had to change my plans from doing Miners Peak to hiking the Goat Creek trail. I have to say I’m very glad I did given that the next 2 days of this trip involved lots of climbing.

This is a very popular trail in the summer but in the winter it’s beautiful and empty! It also has some amzing views of the back end of Mount Rundle.

There’s not really anything exciting to say about this shot, I crossed a bridge an thought the river looked pretty cool so I took the shot. Nice and simple.

The harsh mid-day light on this peak seamed really interesting at the time and I liked how the trees kind of funnel your eye towards the peak.

Moraine Lake

I’m sure you’ve heard of how beautiful Moraine Lake is. Well for my first time up to the lake I decided to go in early winter after a fresh heavy snow, just to make things more interesting.

This had to be one of the most miserably long hikes I have ever done but with that and the fact that the weather hide the amazing views from me, I have no regrets about this epic trip!

After the 12km hike I’ll be the first to admit I didn’t have the energy to go search for an amazing shot. So I found this spot quickly and took the best shot I could. It definitely caught the mod I want to convey!

I saw this spot on the way and made sure to stop on the way back. Much like the last image I was pretty tired and didn’t put in the effort this spot deserved but I think the image turned out fairly well.

Halfway Hut

I’ve discovered a new area!

Actually I didn’t, but I didn’t know how amazing this area was and I definitely want to get back here in warmer weather.

This hike was a prime example of over estimating what I could do, I thought I would be able to make it to the Skoki Mountain Lodge but the snow slowed me down a lot and I only made it to the Halfway Hut. Either way this little hut is pretty cool and would have made for a good hiding spot if nasty weather came in.

This shot was pure luck, I spent most of the day in trees with almost no views then on the way out I noticed a little vantage point where I could get some elevation with a view above the trees.

I really like this shot because it was taken in a super popular location but its not cliché. This side of Lake Louise is rarely shown and I thought the soft curve of the mountain made for a nice composition.

This single strip of red light is what make this image so cool to me, I was feeling disappointed with sunset and ready to pack up and leave when the light caught this cloud just right. It’s kind of weird how the sunset light only got caught by this single cloud.

Mere moments later the sky popped with this beautiful fiery orange along the peaks.

Keep going there’s still more!

Mount Romulus

Well, this one was interesting…

The plan was to hike in and stay 2 nights at the campground but when I woke up to zero viability (literally could not see the trees 10 feet from my tent) I decided to head home a day early.

The cloud cover was so heavy I wasn’t able to see a lot of the peaks, so I decided to work with the mystery created by the clouds.

Utilizing the focus that black and white images bring, I got another shot of the mysterious mountain peaks this time using the low light to make the trees into a more dramatic silhouette.
