Lake Agnes

After coming to a harsh realization that I would not be able to hike very far on the Moraine Lake road, I turned back to Lake Louise for plan B.

Lake Agnes is one of the most popular hiking trails around Lake Louise and therefore is a miserable experiences in the warm months. Luckily in the winter barley anyone goes up there and the views are just as good as the summer. If you get the chance take a hike up there but make sure you check the avalanche reports before starting!

Another different view from Lake Louise, where it’s something that everyone looks at but rarely gets photographed. I really like mood in the clouds surrounding this peak and the snow covered trees.

Aperture: f/5.0

Intimate landscape shots are not something I generally take, but in this case these trees stood out to me because they seam so well layered and with the little snow fluffs to give some definition I think this image is fairly nice to look at.

One of the coolest things about visiting spots like this in winter is knowing that this exact shot has been taken hundreds of times, but rarely in this way.

Focal Length: 18mm

Exposure: 1/160sec

Aperture: f/11

I’ve recently learned that zooming in on peaks can give some amazing results, the light at this point just needed to be shot close up because it was positioned so perfectly on the front face.

Focal Length: 75mm

Exposure: 1/200sec

Aperture: f/11

ISO: 100

Sometimes limitations are good in photography, for this shot I was limited by the fact that I was in an avalanche area and didn’t want to stop and pull out my Nikon so I had to make the short lens on the Canon work.

Focal Length: 45mm

Exposure: 1/640sec

Aperture: f/6.3

ISO: 160

Lake Louise Train Station

So I’ll be honest, this hike was kind of a let down for two main reasons. First, I forgot to bring snowshoes so moving around was nearly impossible unless I walked on trails and there was only one train that passed through while I was in the area.

Even though the hike didn’t go as planned this was only the first of a three day trip with much better results in the latter days.

Also you may notice some of the photos in the gallery that don’t appear in the video these where taken after the hike but are definitely worth sharing.

After waiting in this spot for a while for a train to come, I decided to snap a quick shot before giving up and heading out.

I notice this shot while I was wandering around, it’s one of those shots that is nothing super special but is kind of interesting to look at.

Is it just me or is the texture created by snow and pine trees really nice to look at? It took a little effort but I was able to get a few rows of trees in the foreground to help give an idea of just how many trees your really looking at!

The typical Morant’s Curve shot, just with out a train. Personally I like it better this way because the image is more about the beautiful landscape instead of a man made steel beast.

By far the most recognizable mountain in Banff, Castle mountain stands proud no matter what time of year it is. This shot with soft afternoon lighting and heavy cloud cover really captures all the intricate details of the mountain.

Mount Lady MacDonald

Originally I had not planned to do this hike but as I was leaving the hostel I made the sudden decision to climb this mountain in the dark! This trail is much easier to hike than Grotto Mountain but there was more elevation gain and a real chance of catching an epic sunrise.

About an hour into the hike I stopped to get to get my first pictures of the day and discovered that I had forgotten to bring an SD card for my Nikon, In most cases this wouldn’t be a big issue because I still have one functional camera, the problem comes in when I’m trying to shoot this video and I constantly have to move the single card between my cameras.

Even with the inconveniences of the single card this turned out to be an amazing sunrise and over a very successful sunrise hike.

Just in case you were wondering, yes, the colors were enhanced. I generally like to keep the image looking as real to the scene as possible but in this case I wanted to recreate the scene the way it had looked about 30 minutes before.

Much like the previous day, the third sister just didn’t want to come out to the show! The nice part was that the clouds and warm sunlight worked together to frame the first sister perfectly.

The heavy clouds seamed to be getting stuck right on the tops of the peaks making it look like they where starting to float away. I used black and white on this shot to really bring attention to how big the clouds where.

Another short and easy hike for an attempt at some good sunset shots. Sadly since doing Grotto Mountain the weather only cleared up slightly. Even though this is an easy hike it has some very good view points and if you are out in Canmore I would highly suggest taking a stroll.
