Spray Lakes

On the way back to Canmore, I came across this random turn off near Goat Pond.

The initial point was to park my truck up on the banks of the pond and get some glory shots but I ended spending time watching sled dogs and playing around with long exposures.

This shot was 100% luck! I didn’t expect the sled dog teams to stop right in the center of the lake and it just so happened that the light on the mountains in the background was pretty nice.

If for no other reason than this is a long exposure panorama ( 6 pictures stitched together each with a 13 second exposure ), this is one of the coolest shots I’ve taken in a long time. It’s definitely more difficult taking multiple shot and shooting at longer durations but the result it amazing!

Spray Lakes

Even in warm weather I hate driving on dirt roads, so with that in mind I decided to head out the spray lakes road in winter well before sunrise! Stupid, maybe but also well worth it.

Distance (km)

Photos Taken

With the heavy cloud cover and no chance of sunrise coloring I decided to use it to my advantage. This middle peak was being separated from those behind it by the clouds making it a perfect subject for a black and white shot.

Exposure: 2.0 sec

Aperture: f/13

It’s always cool to see the ice formations late in the winter, once the ice has had time to move and change shape. This crack caught my attention because of the amazing color gradients within the ice.

Focal Length:  45mm

Exposure: 1/60sec

Aperture: f/8.0

ISO: 100

I tried really hard to get a cool composition in this spot, but I honestly don’t know if it was even possible. The chunks of exposed ice had beautiful coloring but I couldn’t get a good angle on them without loosing the mountain in the background.

Focal Length:  42mm

Exposure: 1/400sec

Aperture: f/9.0

ISO: 100

Jan. 31, 2019 | 9:37am

This was another one of those shots where there’s nothing all that interesting about it other than the textures in the ice and snow.

Focal Length:  15mm

Exposure: 1/125sec

Aperture: f/8.0

ISO: 100

Never looking back is bad advice for photographer! Almost back at my truck, I turned around and with the now bright light and wavy snowshoe track, the white expanse was finally worth taking a picture of.

Johnson Lake

After turning back from the hike I had planned to do near Johnson Lake, I tried to find some decent images around Lake Minnewanka but ended up having no luck there either.

Like I said in the video, sometimes you just don’t get a good day of photography and that’s not always bad.

This was one of those shot I took because I was there, it wasn’t until I got home that I realized how nice it actually was. The heavy looking cloud over Mt. Rundle adds just enough drama to the image to make it interesting.

It was really weird seeing this guy walking across the lake, I wasn’t able to get a good shot of him because I only had a 200mm lens. Of course the 600mm lens was in my truck, a 20 minute walk away.

Focal Length: 200mm

Exposure: 1/1000sec

Aperture: f/5.6

Another landscape shot that’s all about textures. I like showing this image to people because without context it usually takes a couple minutes for people to figure out what their looking at.

Focal Length: 135mm

Exposure: 1/160sec

Aperture: f/11

Jan. 30, 2019 | 3:24pm

Well on the way back to the hostel, I noticed the sky starting to get this beautiful coloring and got a little desperate looking for a spot to stop. I found this little turn off, jumped out of my truck and booked it into a field to capture this shot.

Two Jack Lake

I’m sure you’ve heard of how beautiful Moraine Lake is. Well for my first time up to the lake I decided to go in early winter after a fresh heavy snow, just to make things more interesting.

This had to be one of the most miserably long hikes I have ever done but with that and the fact that the weather hide the amazing views from me, I have no regrets about this epic trip!

With just the first bit of sun coming up this scene still has the cold blue hour feeling and super soft colors.

Originally I wanted to avoid this area because I didn’t think the ice that had been skated on looked very good, but once the sunrise really set off and the ice picked up the beautiful coloring I threw my camera over my should and ran to a new spot.

I couldn’t resist getting in close on Mt. Rundle and catching the pink coloring being soaked up by each of the small ridges.
